Spe(a)c(t)ial is a research project exploring the design of AI agent ecosystems for spatial designers. The project investigated how AI could support designers throughout the creative process, allowing them to spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time developing concepts, narratives, and user experiences.
To understand existing workflows, we conducted workshops and analyzed how spatial designers work across different stages of a project. Based on these findings, we identified opportunities for AI assistance and developed a set of specialized AI agents tailored to each phase of the design process. These agents were designed to support tasks such as concept development, ideation, content generation, visualization, and experience planning.
To evaluate the proposed workflow, we created a speculative pop-up store project centered around a fictional new product from the well-known Korean confectionery brand Haitai. Using LLMs, we generated the concept, brand narrative, and marketing slogans. AI image-generation tools were then used to develop promotional materials and visualize the overall spatial direction. Based on these outputs, we designed merchandise, visitor interactions, and spatial experiences, which were further translated into 3D assets and implemented within Unity as an interactive prototype.
The project demonstrates how a coordinated network of AI agents can support end-to-end spatial design workflows, from early-stage concept generation to experience prototyping, while enabling designers to focus on higher-level creative decision-making.
