Neologisms as Cultural Probes is a research project that investigates whether generative AI can better understand rapidly evolving slang and neologisms by learning from contemporary language used by different generations and cultures.
Because new slang emerges and changes faster than most AI systems can adapt, the project explores whether embedding and mapping these terms can reveal underlying cultural similarities and differences. By collecting Korean and Spanish neologisms and analyzing them through semantic embeddings and clustering techniques, the research examines whether seemingly different expressions share common social meanings, emotional contexts, or cultural functions.
The project asks a broader question: if AI can identify connections between culturally specific slang, can it help people better understand one another across linguistic and cultural boundaries? Rather than treating neologisms as mere vocabulary, the research views them as reflections of contemporary values, experiences, humor, and social identity. By mapping relationships between slang from different cultures, the project aims to reduce cultural distance and promote mutual understanding through language.
The outcome includes semantic visualizations, cross-cultural term matching, and AI-generated interpretations that reveal how different societies often express similar ideas through distinct linguistic forms. This research demonstrates the potential of AI as a tool for cultural translation and intercultural communication, extending beyond literal language translation to the interpretation of contemporary cultural meaning.
