The project is inspired by the 1940s film The Wizard of Oz. The iconic transition from black and white to color in the movie represents a historical paradigm shift in cinema, and our work similarly reflects the evolving role of movie theaters in cultural consumption.
The interactive installation consists of two-layered acrylic pieces that depict characters and words in a three-dimensional format. Transparent acrylic was chosen to emphasize the technological aspects, and both the sculptures and recognition stations were designed in Fusion 360 and produced through laser cutting.
From a visual perspective, the display is designed so that from a distance, it forms a large, unified image, but up close, it reveals each individual scene with a striped pattern effect. This was planned for both technical and artistic reasons. Technically, the mosaic effect allows for a dynamic final composition, while artistically, it symbolizes a patchwork-like experience, where audience members contribute their selected scenes to complete the artwork. This reinforces their personal connection with the film and their cinematic memories.

Functions
Participants choose an acrylic piece featuring their most memorable scene from The Wizard of Oz from a designated basket.
Users place their chosen acrylic piece into the recognition station, triggering a random placement of the scene on the media display.
Users can remove their previous selection and replace it with a different acrylic piece, exploring different placements on the digital display.
As more participants contribute their scenes, the digital mosaic gradually forms a complete cinematic image.
